The Department of English, Foreign Languages & Telecommunications contributes to the University's core curriculum by helping students develop an appreciation for language and literature, become more competent in language usage, and refine their critical and analytical skills. Instruction in the major and minor curricula provides training that will enable students to advance their knowledge of the disciplines and to engage in research, as well as creative and practical experiences.
The Department offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree in English and telecommunications. Minors are available in each of these disciplines, and Spanish and French are also taught. In collaboration with the School of Education, the Department offers courses leading to teaching certification in English and language arts. These programs are outlined by the Department of Secondary Education.
The Department is also home to the Alabama A&M University Writing Project, one of 195 national sites dedicated to the improvement of writing as a means of learning across all disciplines, from K-16 levels. We also claim a fair share of teaching excellence, which has been recognized through several winners of the College of Arts and Science Teacher of the Year Award: Leroy Sterling, Tânia Hering (2002-03), and Sandra Shattuck (2003-04).
