Welcome To Biology

Welcome to the Biology Department at Alabama A&M University. Our academic program is dynamic and prepares our students for a variety of careers in health care, research, industry, teaching and related fields. Biology as the study of life is the gateway to many exciting educational and employment opportunities in industry. Diverse Issues in Higher Education's Top 100 Degree Producers, 2009, ranked AAMU 7th in the production of African American graduates in Biological & Biomedical Sciences in the nation for the year 2008. http://diverseeducation.com/top09/top100listing.html?

Our biology students at AAMU learn and practice science through our interactive class lectures, laboratory exercises and projects, field trips, pre-professional internships, and summer research experiences. Our teaching involves a hands-on approach and so our students not only study science, they actually DO science. Our program emphasizes collaborative learning with emphasis on the development of problem-solving and critical thinking skills of our students. These skills constitute the foundation of a successful career in the biological sciences. We have a very active Pre-Professional Program (Premed, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Nursing, Pre-Vet, Pre-Physician Assistant) that endeavors to engage our students to learn about the health professions and meet with medical, dental and other professional specialists. Our students work for or 'shadow' practitioners through our biology internship program. Our Pre-Health Advisory Committee members advise students on how to prepare for professional school, and assist them in the application process to ensure they submit strong applications to these professional schools.

The Master of Science degree in Biology has two options: thesis or non-thesis. Students complete course work that allows them to master the concepts and techniques of their chosen discipline. They also conduct research under the direction of faculty, and write up their findings as a Master's Thesis or Masters report. Generally, students take about two years to complete their graduate degree requirements

Many of our Biology majors go on to attend professional schools in the health professions (medical, pharmacy, public & environmental health, veterinary medicine, nursing, physician assistant, chiropractry and dental schools). Others go on to graduate studies (MS and PhD) that lead to careers in research, industry, or government. While others pursue careers in teaching, law, business and journalism.
