ABSTRACT
Climate change due to anthropogenic emissions is becoming inevitable in the coming decades. Coupled ocean and atmospheric General Circulation Models (GCM) are generally used to project future warmings. These climate models are forced by future atmospheric CO2 concentrations projected by carbon cycle models. The carbon cycle models are, in turn, forced by projection of fossil fuel emissions based on various scenario of global economy. It is recognized that feedbacks between climate and carbon cycle can amplify climate change. In order to address and include these feedbacks, climate and carbon cycle models should be coupled. Recently, we have developed a comprehensive GCM-based coupled Climate and Carbon Cycle Model at LLNL. The model configuration, some transient climate change experiment and preliminary results from this unique capability will be presented.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Dr. Bala Govindasamy obtained his Ph.D. in 1994 from McGill University, Canada in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. He specialized in numerical simulation of mid-latitude winter storms. He was a post-doc at Princeton University for 2 years. Then he moved to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 1996. Since then he has worked on climate change using General Circulation Models. He is a key player in High-resolution climate modeling and the development of a coupled climate and carbon cycle model
Refreshments will be served at 10:45 AM
