The following goals guide the Graduate Social Work Program at Alabama A&M University:
Prepare students, particularly students from historically oppressed populations to become advanced level professional practitioners in Direct Practice (Family and Child Welfare and Community Mental Health) and Policy, Planning and Administration who are capable of establishing professional relationships and working competently and ethically with diverse individuals, families, groups, rural and urban communities, and public and private organizations.
Prepare advanced level social work practitioners in Direct Practice and in Policy Planning and Administration to (a) apply critical thinking skills, (b) synthesize and apply the EPPSE conceptual framework (ecological perspective, problem solving model and empowerment perspective) and (c) use other appropriate practice frameworks and theories in responding to the needs of a wide range of client systems.
Prepare students with social work foundation knowledge (including the generalist social work perspective, social work values and ethics, appreciation of diversity, knowledge of social and economic justice, vulnerable populations, human behavior in the social environment, social welfare policies and services, social work practices, research and field practicum) and with specialized knowledge in an area of concentration, Direct Practice (Family and Child Welfare or Community Mental Health) or Policy, Planning and Administration.
Prepare students who: (a) are knowledgeable of the social context of social work practice, including its history and current structure; (b) are cognizant of the dynamics of organizational behavior and change; and (c) contribute to and cooperate with community-based agencies evaluating and planning change of social work welfare organizations, policies and programs to enhance the functioning of vulnerable, oppressed and at-risk populations in Alabama, regionally, nationally and globally.
Instill in students the necessity for and commitment to lifelong learning in social work and offer quality continuing social work education for program graduates and other social work professionals to enhance the delivery of human services through effective practice, supervision and consultation.
